How You Can Better Motivate Your Employees

What motivates your employees?

Do you know how to motivate employees to perform up to their full potential?

Do you motivate employees the way in which they desire to be motivated?

Are you motivating employees enough to get the results your organization needs?

Do you know which buttons to push???

Different things motivate different employees. For some the lure of a hefty commission check at the end of the month really gets them excited. While others are motivated by a genuine desire to help others, or the opportunity to solve a difficult problem and learn something new in the process.

Effectively motivating employees can actually be quite simple: People are motivated by what they place value on. For example somebody who places a high value on helping others will be motivated by a position or opportunity where he or she can truly help other people. It makes sense - you wouldn't hire a nurse who didn't care about helping others.

Another example: people who value money and personal belongings will can be effectively motivated by monetary incentives. If you know that a team member places a high value on money, offer a compensation plan that includes bonuses for achieving specified goals and objectives.

The key to motivating team members lies in understanding what they value.

The way in which you motivate employees at your organization can have a dramatic effect on employee retention. It's important to recognize that when it comes to employee motivation, one size does not fit all. At The Rainmaker Group we have the tools you need to better understand and better motivate your employees.

The TTI Workplace Motivators Report identifies six key value categories that motivate people and employees to action. These categories are:

  • Individualistic/Political - The desire for power, influence and control over their own destiny as well as that of others.

  • Utilitarian/Economic - A characteristic interest in money/utility and return on investment

  • Theoretical - An interest in the discovery of knowledge and an appetite for learning

  • Aesthetic - A relative interest in form, balance, and harmony

  • Social/Altruistic - A keen interest in helping others

  • Traditional/Regulatory - A focused interest in following a specific system for living

Understanding the key categories that motivate employees can be incredibly valuable. Imagine knowing with relative precision what motivates your individual employees. Not all employees are motivated by money. While most employees expect monetary rewards for exceptional performance, it is not what really motivates them. With an in-depth understanding of what values motivate your employees, you are better able to push the buttons that motivate each individual employee.

This information can go a long way in the effort to retain your top employees. Understanding that John doesn't want a big bonus so much as he would rather have the opportunity to attend several trade shows throughout the year and increase his product knowledge can greatly improve the approach taken to motivate and ultimately reward John. This holds true for all employees. One size does not fit all!

Imagine the money you could save by not needlessly giving raises and bonuses in an effort to retain top employees. Worried that Suzy is thinking about employment elsewhere? Perhaps all she wants is an office with a view and to hang a few of her oil paintings in her office. Being offered another raise to keep her around, might only confirm to her that you don't understand her at all and actually push her in the other direction, and right out the door! A better approach might be to establish some sort of performance measure and reward her with the open office if she hits her numbers.

Without powerful assessment tools used by The Rainmaker Group, you might never know that John would rather attend a couple of trade shows and Suzy would like an office with a window and her own personal touch as much as they would like a 3% pay raise.

With the same Workplace Motivators report however, you will be able to determine that Bill is highly motivated by monetary incentives such as pay raises and performance based bonuses. Odds are that Bill will work incredibly hard to achieve predetermined goals if the "price is right"

If your team members are in need of a little motivation and inspiration give us a shout and we'll help you determine the best methods to push the right buttons and truly inspire those you work with.
