QBQ! QuickNote - QBQ! Leadership at all Levels

This Week's QBQ! QuickNote

Our story this week comes from Joseph in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Enjoy!

John, QBQ! is alive and working well for Cumberland County Schools. It is recognizable in the district no matter where I go. In fact, even outside the district!

I recently attended the Alternative Learning Educator's Conference in Winston Salem, North Carolina. I had the pleasure of staying at the Marriott. Friday morning, as I prepared for the conference, I realized I had everything but deodorant in my luggage. When breakfast was delivered to my room, I mentioned my small problem to the server and asked where I could find deodorant. Without hesitation he replied, "Sir, I'll get you some from downstairs in our gift shop." Before I could say a word, he was gone.

When he returned twenty minutes later he stated, "I'm sorry it took longer than I expected. I had to leave the building to find some for you." He left the property for me!? What service! And he didn't even give me a bill for the product! But, of course, he did share with me how happy he was to be of service. And I was happy to tip him. And, I suspect my conference colleagues were happy too-that I got my problem solved before a full day of meetings!

Above all, he reinforced for me, as a public servant myself, the need to continue asking the excellent questions outlined in your books such as, "What can I do to help improve situations/solve problems?" and not ask, "Why do others make mistakes?" or say "Hey, it's not my problem." The blame game never solves problems. Practicing personal accountability is the way to improve our world.

So thanks John! We're still "flipping the switch" at Cumberland County Schools. Also, a Great Big Thank You goes to all the folks at the Marriott in Winston Salem, N.C. I'll definitely be back!

For years, we at QBQ, Inc. have espoused the radical idea that leadership is not about title, position, or tenure. It is about the way we think, act, serve - and the legacy we leave. Can the titles granted us by our organizations leave a legacy? Of course not. Only people do that. And since very few, if any, titled CEOs, vice-presidents, or directors can truly reach the consumer of their product or service and leave a lasting imprint-a legacy-on the marketplace, we need leadership at all levels.

Thanks, Joseph. It's good to know QBQ! Leadership lives, and it's good to hear people everywhere know that leadership can happen at all levels of an organization. Nobody at the top of the "org chart" with a big title can do it alone. We each need to own the goal, live the mission, solve the problem, and leave the legacy. We all need to be leaders.

So simple. So easy. All we have to do is ask the right questions.

Personal Accountability should be an important part of every organizational culture. Unfortunately though a culture of personal accountability is often times eroded and replaced by a destructive culture characterized by negativity, blame shifting, finger pointing, and poor employee morale.

QBQ! The Question Behind The Question seeks to eliminate this noxious culture and replace it with one where individuals take responsibility for their actions and ask themselves what they as individuals can do to help the organization succeed and prosper.
